Lucy's Lobster Tales

Hi I'm Lucy! I know that we Maine Lobsters are a real treat with you humans. You probably don't know this but because of the cold water off the coast of Maine, we thrive and become "the best of the litter" here – so to speak. According to Guinness, the world's largest lobster ever caught was in Nova Scotia, Canada, was thought to be over 100 years old and weighed 20.15 kg (44.4 lb). That’s a lot of lobster stew! Did you know that some lobsters are "right handed" and some are "left handed?" You can tell by the crusher claw which is the biggest. Make sure you don't let your fingers get in the way of that claw if we are still squirming. Usually bands are put on our claws to make us behave. Somewhat like a muzzle on a dog – if you get my drift.

We species are very lucky, if we lose a claw or an eye we have the ability to grow another – neat. We also "molt" or shed our shells and the frequency depends on our age. Mainers know that "soft" or "new" shell lobsters, generally caught during June and July, are the sweetest and the easiest to eat. They're also more fragile and don’t ship well, so they are less expensive. You can basically only get them here. Another reason you may want to Own a Piece of Maine!

Let me tell you a little secret. Not many people know that in 1997 the Maine legislature passed a law allowing residents to set up to 5 non-commercial lobster traps in our waters. So, if you Owned a Piece of Maine, you could be eating fresh lobsters free! My friend Judy Cooper can help you make that happen.

I'd love to help you with finding the perfect lobster in the perfect setting. If you will and tell me where you are traveling in Maine, I will e-mail you back and tell you where you can get the best lobsters. Hey, what's a lobster for?

Happy eating!
